唐三彩 tánɡsāncǎi noun [Archaeology] Tang tricolour 唐三彩Tricoloured glazed pottery from the Tang Dynasty. Found predominantly in Luoyang and Xi'an, it includes coloured and glazed ceramic figurines, animals and utensils, used as burial objects. The raw material used was a clay that turned white or reddish after firing. At this point it was painted in the three main colours of red, green and white. Blue, yellow, brown and purple were also used. It was then heated for a second time in the kiln. Tricoloured glazed pottery flourished in the Tang Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, tricoloured glaze was used mainly for tiles and roof ridges. |
